Immigration and Tax Law: What's the Connection?

The ABA Section of Litigation, Immigration Litigation Committee is proud to present the next installment of our new Lunch and Learn Series.  We will continue to offer complementary teleconferences featuring prominent attorneys, government speakers and individuals specializing in various areas of law that touch on immigration.   

 Join us on  Wednesday, November 16, 2011  from  12:30 – 2 pm est. For a teleconference discussing:  

“Immigration and Tax Law: What's the Connection?”

Join  Roberta Freedman of Clark Hill, Paula Jones of Reed Smith, Mary Voce and Diana Davis of Greenberg Traurig, LLP,  and Willard (Bill) Yates from the Office of the Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service for a discussion moderated by Parisa Karaahmet of Fragomen on the intersections between immigration and tax laws.


This teleconference will discuss the application of tax laws to relevant immigration filings, the general rules regarding tax filings for immigrants and nonimmigrants, as well as an overview of taxation of foreign nationals residing in the U.S.  The panelists will provide practice pointers on tax planning for foreign nationals prior to their arrival in the U.S.  and will also discuss issues surrounding declaration of foreign assets and foreign bank accounts, obligations regarding what needs to be declared, and civil and criminal penalties for failure to declare.
