“It’s disturbing that Phil Scott is just now finding his voice and speaking out against the handling of the EB-5 program at Q Burke. As a statewide elected official with intimate knowledge of the workings of the project, Scott was in a unique position to speak out many months ago. Despite recent efforts to rewrite history, he was a vocal supporter of the EB-5 program in the Northeast Kingdom, even when he knew full well it was under investigation. While it’s politically convenient for Scott to decry the administration’s handling of EB-5 today, he failed to sound the alarm as recently as November 2015, when he was still on the record cheering the projects.
“Voters have a serious decision to make about the kind of leadership they want in Montpelier. Do they want a governor who will take a fresh, honest approach to economic development and job creation? Or do they want a politician who will sit on the sidelines and wait to Monday morning quarterback when it’s politically expedient?”
Phil Scott touted the Northeast Kingdom’s EB-5 program for years, despite the fact that alarms started sounding publicly as early as 2012. As recently as November 2015, despite the fact that it was public knowledge that the projects were under investigation. In the midst of a political campaign, Scott is attempting to change the record on his support to cover a failure to stand up against the EB-5 ponzi scheme even when he had information that questionable business practices were putting small businesses and Newport’s entire downtown at risk.
