After much delay, PhoenixMart has been granted a building permit to construct the shell of the project’s main building.
The city of Casa Grande issued the permit Monday after repeatedly reviewing design plans for the main building that will sit at the center of the project’s 585-acre site, located near Florence Boulevard and Overfield Road.
The permit allows AZ Sourcing, parent company of PhoenixMart, to start vertical construction of the building designed to hold about 1,700 suites, which will presumably be leased out to various wholesalers.
City officials and AZ Sourcing representatives had given earlier projections of when the building permit would be approved. Mayor Bob Jackson referenced it in his most recent state of the city address, expecting the permit to be issued sometime in March. The company has made numerous changes over the past few years that have slowed down plans, however.
Casa Grande Planning and Development Director Paul Tice said the most recent delays were tied to some contractual changes AZ Sourcing had made. The company reportedly changed contractors, according to Tice, ending its prior agreement with Layton Construction.
