If you want to create confusion, become a bureaucrat, but don’t do it during the current administration. They are so adept, they don’t need any help.
The latest government-created fiasco in the immigration sector involves the issuance of work permits under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). For some reason currently unknown to us, the Obama administration began issuing work permits valid for three years last November. By rule of law, the permits are only good for two years.
In February, a federal judge issued an injunction against the change and directed the USCIC to limit the stays to the permitted two years. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that, in the interim, the USCIS had approved some 2,500 illegal work permits. Although about 1,500 of the invalid permits have been returned as requested, the “USCIS has threatened to invalidate the DACA status for individuals who do not return their mistakenly issued work permits by July 30, 2015.” As of July 15, agents have begun a home-visit program to retrieve the illegally-issued permits.
The USCIS intention is to retrieve and replace, but the threat of invalidation has made it appear to many immigrants that their status is in danger. We recommend reaching out to anyone who may have been issued the wrong permits, if only to reassure them and assist them in receiving their replacement permits.
