The historic Mount Vernon Hotel in Baltimore is getting a new facelift thanks, in part, to $6 million in funding from Chinese EB-5 investors. The hotel originally opened in 1907 and is noted for its elegance and charm, as well as its convenient location within walking distance of the Inner Harbor, the Walters Art Museum, the convention center, the Baltimore Orioles’ Camden Yards, and many of the finest restaurants in the area. Johns Hopkins University, the Babe Ruth Museum and Fort McHenry are close by. Annapolis and the District of Columbia are both less than an hour away.
Shaffin Jetha is a developer known for looking for finding creative financing and funding sources. Combined with an additional $14 million from Virginia Heritage Bank, Mr. Jetha has acquired the hotel, relabeling it under the Indigo brand of Intercontinental Hotels and refurbishing it inside and out to weave the story of the Mount Vernon neighborhood throughout each guest experience, “from locally sourced food and drinks . . . to the art, photography and architecture incorporated into the hotel’s design.”
The hotel restoration is one of the first EB-5 funded projects in Baltimore. However, the Regional Center that helped Mr. Jetha obtain the funding for the hotel is already planning several more projects in the Baltimore – DC metropolitan area, including offices, apartments and assisted living projects.
